Our HorsesAll our horses are geldings. This is a conscious choice I made after my experiences from the working ranches in USA. The geldings are more even-tempered than mares and stallions, which I feel are more for breeding and competeing. All our horses, apart from Jack, have been barefoot for many years. They all live together in a field of 30ha all year around, and they have a shelter of 450 square meters. The horses are calm and well adjusted. When Lesley Desmond, a well known horse trainer and author was here, she commented: " Lollo, I've been working with horses all my life, and been travelling around for 8 years, and I've never met such nice and well trained horses " Even Terje Ness, who's been working more than 25 years on American and Canadian ranches told us that our horses have a special attitude that he'd never seen before. These are words that warm my soul and lift my spirit. You are welcome to ride our horses! / Lollo Nilsson
Bolero
When I bought Bolero in 1988, he was my guide into western riding, this wonderful way of riding and communicating with the horse. In this way, he also became the foundation for Jultorp Ranch. Long before I learned that western riding excisted in Sweden, he was Swedish Roping Champion. Bolero has taught me a lot, and I'm sorry to admit that many times I found him stupid when he tried to show me how to do things, and I thought I knew better. Today we have a great relationship- when he wants something, he looks into my eyes until I hopefully understand.
Bolero is very versatile - apart from being Roping Champion he's been a knight's horse in Paris. He's a clever ranch-horse, and good with cows. I use him to stand on when we put down poles for fencing. And you can put him in front of any kind of equipment, he's a very clever carriage horse. Bolero has even learned to be a bartender, but he had problems mixing drinks! In his later years he only drinks red wine, with a bowl of rolled oats. Now he's old and retired. He doesn't do lessons anymore, and just breaks into a trot or canter when some younger horses try to pass him by, and he surely will not tolerate that. He's still the boss!
Agaton FA 287/93
Buck Buck is a wonderful boy. He's very stable, and a very popular ride. He came to the ranch as a 3 year old , did his training the autumn of '01 , was an apprentice in the spring of '02, and now he's a pro who knows his job. He's worked his way up in the herd, just because he's just being himself. He's always doing his best, but is very sensitive to the rider's weight and signals, so you have to concentrate. He's a very handsome horse.
Joe Gunder An athletic, intelligent horse with a strong personality. Gunder has had great success in competitions, but tired on it. When Gunder came in to the herd, he went directly to the third place . His personality sure makes him a favorite, and when you enter his back, you sure can feel there is a horse between your legs. The first time I met him, he told me loud and clear: "I'm me, just so you know it."
Little Joe Little Joe is always happy, never sick, -never a problem. He will go anywhere, and does all that's asked of him. Little Joe used to be a real water horse, running at a full gallop into the lake. ( see the photo album), but something must have happened since, because now he always walks slowly through the lake. A clever horse, completely without vices. A gem.
Make My Day Make is the policeman at the ranch. He's number two in the hierarchy (after Bolero), and since I'm hard on the disciplin and have great demands on the horses, I have many times been annoyed with Make because he after my opinion disturbed the lessons.
So that was the problem- if you can call it that. After this we better understood his behaviour, and it ceased to be a problem. Today he's a gem. He knows his job,and can handle most riders. If the rider loses balance at the gallop, he will stop on his own accord. He's strong, and there's never anything wrong with him.
Sunny Boy Sunny will never do anything if you don't get it right. He's one of our best horses. He has a strong and wonderful psyche, but will not work if the rider doesn't get the signals right. He's very disciplined and clever, but needs a rider who knows how to ride, if not he's easily bored.
Rebells Wizard Rebell is just getting better and better. In his earlier years he needed a good rider, but now he even takes care of the novices. A nice horse who seems to enjoy the lessons, and enjoys a good gallop if the rider dares to let him go. He really likes to run.
Red Cloud Red is an appaloosa, but has no papers. We think he grew up as a semi- wild horse on the heaths in Ireland. At one time he arrived in Sweden and were in a couple of riding schools. But he was very aggressive, so he was sold, and finally came here. Now he's one of our best horses. Red is very alert and takes in everything, never gets in trouble with the other horses- like the arabs, he's always in the right spot when something happens. He's been raised by other horses in a natural way. He has all the requirements for his breed, but unfortunately no papers. He's an extremely versatile horse with great speed, and everyone can ride him.
Go Flit Five Roan , which he's called because of his color, is our biggest and strongest horse. He's like a huge teddy bear, with a great and forgiving heart. When you start riding him, he can be a little slow, but when you improve, he'll improve with you. He's very clever and generous, but need a strong rider not to get bored. When you let him go at a gallop in the fields, you might think he's bucking when his strong haunches push you forward!
Silver Silver is a true gentleman. Kind, caring, nice- everything you would like. In his younger days he was one of the fastest horses, now he's a little more relaxed. Still does his lessons, but only with small riders. Silver has Arabian letters tattooed on his neck, but we don't know the meaning.
Little King King was imported from Josh Armstrong's training stables in USA. King can be quite tough with the other horses in the field if they try to pick on him because he's small - he'll never back off. He's a very sweet horse who feels so much bigger when you ride him. He accelerates like a racing car. He's small, and quite easy to ride , but makes the most of himself with an experienced rider.
Tuff Scorpion Tuffy comes from Bob Loomis Stables in Oklahoma. Tuffy is the horse with the most expensive pedigree - Top Sail Cody is thought to be worth $ 1 million. Tuffy is a fantastic horse, well schooled and gentle. He will take care of most riders, and always tries to do his best.
Cotton Night Joe A big and strong horse. Bought from Germany the summer of -05. Waylon is extremely stable. He keeps his calm whatever is going on around him. He never stresses, he scares no one- he's just plain and simply calm. Unfortunately- what should never happen did happen- in the winter of '05 he got into the feedroom, and got laminitis. He seems to have recovered, but still has some time time to go until he's back to normal.
Contoureds Viktor Before he came here, Viktor was a competition horse. He's a small horse with well developed muscles, and a great lesson horse. Like Sunny, he's got lots of power, which makes him need a rider with good hands and seat even though he now will take care of most riders. He's very forward going and positive, and very willing to please. And of course- he has great speed and acceleration.
Jackaroo Mischief Jack is a mischief. He makes the work harder than it has to be- one tape is not enough, then he just goes under it. He's very adventurous, at times you can see him thinking about wether it's worth the effort to escape, because it's so hard to get back in. He will check how strong the electric is, and then he will find the easiest way out, lower his head and walk under the tape. And then he can't figure his way back in.
A Real Alert. Baghera is a big, very well muscled Quarter. He demands a very experienced rider with a soft hand and a good seat. That's why he seldom takes part in the lessons. Baghera is for sale to the right person. He has a great capacity, jumps very well and loves to work. But not in the lessons!
Fayk Fayk is also a gentleman, and he's developing all the time. As a lesson horse, he's just getting better and better. He enjoys speed , but doesn't scare anyone. His favorite movement is rollbacks. Fayk is very kind and gentle and cares for his rider in many ways. He's always in a suitable, positive mood.
